Blanc et Noir
Music in its full splendor
The duo “Blanc et Noir”, made up of Yudum Çetiner and Selin Şekeranber, is the living proof that a mix of black and white does not necessarily result in a bland gray: The two young pianists present richly nuanced, colorful musical interpretations and form one musical entity.
Çetiner and Şekeranber were both born and raised in Ankara, Turkey. They first met at the age of 13 at Bilkent University, where they shared a piano teacher. After that, however, their paths separated: Yudum Çetiner perfected her art i.a. at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow, the Munich University for Music and Performing Arts, and the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. Selin Şekeranber began her education at the Bilkent University in Ankara, later studied at the Lausanne Conservatory, and finally ended up at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart as well.
After meeting again in Stuttgart, they began their voyage of discovery into the world of piano literature for four hands in addition to their solo careers. Since 2008, Yudum Çetiner and Selin Şekeranber have been active as a duo. Just three years later, they were chosen among 200 participants at the 2011 IBLA Grand Prize World Music Competition in Italy and were awarded the Special Prize of the Jury. Since 2013, the duo Blanc et Noir has been accompanied by the renowned piano duo Hans-Peter and Volker Stenzl.
In the following years the two artists were invited to participate in numerous music festivals, i.a. the Music Festival in Lausanne, Switzerland, the University International Music Festival (FIMU) in Belfort, France, the International Marsyas Culture, Art and Music Festival in Turkey, the Bosch Young Classics Festival in Istanbul, the festival “Typically Turkish?” in Stuttgart, the Piano City Milano, one of the most renowned piano festivals in Italy, the Festival Weeks Danube-Upper Swabia, as well as the Tallinn Music Festival in Estonia and the Eesti Muusika-ja Teatriakadeemia in Tallinn. On the occasion of the latter two guest performances, the duo Blanc et Noir also conducted master classes for chamber music. Most recently, the duo performed at the GreenSpring International Academy of Music in Richmond (U.S.A.), where they also held a master class, as well as in the Chamber Music Hall of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society.
The duo has also performed concerts with numerous orchestras including the orchestra of Germany's oldest orchestral society, the Orchesterverein Stuttgart, the renowned Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey or the State Symphony Orchestra of Izmir.
The two pianists performed the Turkey premiere of the world famous pianist and composer Fazıl Say's concert for two pianos and orchestra (“Gezi Park I”) in Eskişehir, Turkey, and their rearrangement of Say’s “Black Earth (Kara Toprak)” for two pianos was published by the renowned German music publisher Schott Music.
“The Essence of Piano Duo” and "Hands" released by A. K. Music Istanbul and available on streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify, has much more to offer than just this song – besides compositions by Debussy, Moszkowski, Shostakovich, Mozart, Piazzolla and Rachmaninoff, it also contains melodies from the duo’s native Turkey.
